Trevor Jang, a band member of the Witset First Nation and clan member of the Laksilyu (Small Frog) clan of the Wet’suwet’en Nation, has joined the ChinookX team as co-founder and director of communications. In this role he will be leading the communications and marketing plans for engaging the tech sector and Indigenous communities.
“There is so much potential with emerging technologies to support Indigenous resurgence. I spent a long time as a journalist reporting on the community conflicts and division caused by resource extraction projects. I’ve seen that harm first hand. Clean tech is the future and it’s something I believe everyone can get behind,” Jang says.
Jang’s media and communications career has spanned three radio stations and about a dozen digital publications. He received industry award recognition in digital, print and broadcast journalism for his in-depth reporting on Indigenous rights and reconciliation in Canada. He has also managed communications for his band Chief and Council.
In 2018, Jang engaged Indigenous peoples across every region of BC with the First Nations Technology Council. He facilitated dialogue sessions with Elders, leaders, youth, educators, administrators and entrepreneurs exploring the future of digital technologies in their communities.
Jang came away from that experience with a new passion for exploring how emerging tech can advance Indigenous sovereignty.
“With his experience in community, media savvy and storytelling gifts, Trevor is perfect to launch and build the ChinookX brand. He will ensure we’re communicating with communities in digital and physical spaces in a culturally-safe and respectful way, which is critical,” says Lee White, fellow ChinookX co-founder and director of client relations.
